Above, bottom: An amNewYork caption accompanying the photograph informs readers that buses will soon stop in East New York, quite possibly the least ritzy neighborhood in New York City.

From today’s amNewYork:

I sure hope she has an elevator to get to all 17 of those floors.

On another note, I caught this scene over the weekend and had to snap a picture.

That’s one way to take out your frustration on a poorly-edited newspaper. It’s amazing that someone hates amNewYork even more than I do!

amNewYork wants to know: are you, dear reader, working on Labor Day? Or, at the very least, they’re asking that question on this morning’s front page.

If your answer is “yes,” that’s a real bummer. To find out the results of the poll, however, just open amNewYork’s next issue…

…which, according to the note two pages into the paper, will be after they take the day off for Labor Day!

From today’s amNewYork:

tamp [tamp] - v. 1. to force in or down by repeated, rather light, strokes: He tamped the tobacco in his pipe. 2. (in blasting) to fill (a drilled hole) with earth or the like after the charge has been inserted.

No. I don’t think that works here.

Also, I don’t think most readers of amNewYork have ever even heard the word “tamp.”

Hey, you know what’s a great way to learn about a neighborhood? Interview someone who HASN’T LIVED THERE FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS!

Also, it would help if you KNEW THE NAME OF THE PERSON YOU’RE INTERVIEWING.

In today’s amNewYork:

Um, the Dow was up 286 points yesterday. It even says so in the first sentence of the article.

amNewYork’s TV writer apparently doesn’t watch enough TV.  

I don’t exactly know how The CW is responsible for the cancellation of [the] The O.C., especially since the show aired on Fox.

This doozy of a chart was in today’s am New York:

Ahh, let’s see… where should I begin?Let’s start with the visual aspects of the chart. First of all, nobody puts 50 cents on a Metrocard. I know, this is kind of nit-picky of me, and you could technically put 50 cents on a Metrocard, but it wouldn’t get you jack squat.

Next, look at the fare hikes in 1986, 1990, and 1992. They’re shown in the form of Metrocards. Except… Metrocards didn’t exist in 1986, 1990, or 1992. Ever hear of subway tokens? No? Oh, right, you’re from some crappy little town in the Midwest and came to the city to strike it rich as a journalist for a free daily.

Finally, the fares aren’t adjusted for inflation. You know what 1986’s $1.00 fare is in 2007 dollars? $1.94. You know what 1995’s $1.50 fare is in 2007 dollars? $2.05. We’re actually paying less for the subway now than we were twelve years ago. But am New York won’t tell you that, because their reporters don’t believe it things like “research” or “backstories.”

Did anyone - anyone - stop to look at this page in today’s am New York before it went to press and think, “hey, maybe we should reverse these two photos! It wouldn’t be that hard, and it would make a lot more sense?”

No, I think the reaction was closer to “ehhhhh… close enough.”

I’ve said it 44 times before, more or less: you get what you pay for.
