This Week in Badvertising: Every Super Bowl Ad But This One

An informal poll of all my friends and co-workers seem to point to this being the best ad from the Super Bowl… in my social circle, at least:

Gawker called this one of the worst ads, and I wonder what they’re smoking over there. I’m guessing they’ve never had a job they hated before.

The koala holding the coffee cup gets me every time. It’s one of the only bright spots in an otherwise miserable year for Super Bowl ads. Sure, there were other noteworthy spots, but the ones that got the most attention are entirely my least favorites. For example, USA Today’s Ad Meter winner? The Free Doritos ad. Have I gotten too old for this? I don’t find any humor in a snow globe to the groin. Sure, maybe fifteen years ago, but not anymore.

What were your favorites? Discuss.

That’s funny! But what I thought was even funnier than the commercials was the interview with Obama before the game. When he said, “I’d like to give a shout out to the soldiers..” WTF?? Did he actually say that?? The aging Springsteen trying to do deep aerobics on stage was amusing too :))

I liked the hulu commercial, with Alec Baldwin, brain slurping alien extraordinaire.

Wasn’t a fan of this ad. I’ll admit the koala part was mildly funny, but the other clips in the ad weren’t, especially when they were repeated over and over again. By the time the koala even showed up, I was already sick of the entire ad, so it was hardly redeeming.

The koala was the best part of any advert. I think it depends on the intention of advertising - I have no idea (still) what the ad was for, but liked seeing a koala with a coffee cup getting punched in the face. Repeatedly.

Um…what about the grease monkeys? Maybe I am just a sucker for anything featuring chimps.

This is hands down the best. The koala says “Oh dear!” right after he gets punched! Classic.

And fuck Gawker. No way it was one of the worst.

I’m with you on this ad being the best. Apparently you and your officemates are not the only ones, either, according to the NYT tweet analysis (see talking about ads):

But my six-year-old loved and kept talking about the first Doritos ad, so they’ve got that market segment at least.
