Let Me Answer That Question For You
The New York Post posed a question in an article this morning that I think I can answer.
Because you have to pay for gas in a car.
Because you don’t have to sit in traffic on the subway.
Because you have to find a place to park when you drive.
Because you usually have to pay for that parking.
Because the nearest subway stop is probably closer to your apartment than this car rental place.
Because it’s illegal to listen to your iPod through headphones while driving.
Because you run the risk of getting in a car accident when you drive.
Because when you drive, you will suddenly become inexplicably frustrated by the same pedestrians you normally join on a daily basis.
Because your blood pressure will undoubtedly rise due to road rage.
Because you feel no need to contribute to the cancer and asthma-causing pollutants that are already in the air.
Because during the afternoon rush hour, the subway is almost always faster.
Because in a car, you won’t get the human interaction that leads to a Craigslist Missed Connection.
Because the subway is Manhattan’s only escape from horn-honking.
Because walking is good excercise.
Because walking with shopping bags is better excerise.
Because you can’t play games on your cell phone while driving.
Because you could get a ticket for parking illegally, running a red light, or blocking the box.
Because you have to give the car back, but you can ride the subway as long as you want.
Because subway riders never run the risk of getting carjacked.
Because there are just as many panhandlers - if not more - on the street than in the subway.
Because thanks to unlimited Metrocards and the fare bonus, nobody really pays two bucks for a swipe.
Because you’d have to stuff another key in your pocket, and in those tight jeans, it would look unsightly.
Because you can have a couple drinks before you ride the subway.
Because you can have more than a couple drinks before you ride the subway.
Because in a car, you’ll learn that the smell on the subway is actually you.
Because driving in the city sucks.
Just because.

Manhattan snob says:Try leaving “the city” once in a while. Couldn’t the author of that article have been referring to renting a car for trips outside the sacred confines of New York City?

Chris says:Manhattan snob: I don’t know how you could think that. The author suggested that in place of taking the subway, you can rent a car. He didn’t say, “why take LIRR to Montauk when you can rent a car?”
