The PC Police, In Full Force

I’m beginning to think that the only way to keep ourselves from offending others is to not say anything at all.

Nothing surprises me anymore.

Apparently, “gypped” really does come from “gypsy” (a persecuted minority in Europe if there ever was one). So unless you think it’s also okay to say you “jewed the price down” on something…

    Todd says:

You’re also no longer allowed to say that “traffic moved at a snail’s pace” because it’s insulting to snails. “Scotch tape” is also no longer allowed to exist because it’s offensive to Scottish people.

In all seriousness, people who constantly are offended my things need to shoot themselves. In the face. With a flamethower.

Sarah: Well, tell that to the millions of people who use “gypped” every day. I’m sure they’re intentionally using it as a racial slur every time.

Gersh is sort of a parody of himself. Don’t take what he says over there too seriously.

I feel quite gyped by Sarah’s comment. Call a Roma person a Gypsy to their face and see if they don’t find it derogatory.

I just hope that nobody wakes up one day to find themselves having been Shanghai’d!!!

    Sarah says:

Chris, I’m sure they’re not intentionally using it as a slur (I used it all the time myself before I found out, and actually kind of miss it), but so what? That’s the joy of living in a culture still saturated in the racist junk of the past: you don’t have to intend to be offensive to be so. Up til the point you realize, no one can blame you; after that, it’s on you.

I was gypped I tell ya says:

Now we’re actually supposed to pretend that gypsies have historically been just victims as opposed to victimizers, con artists and parasites? Please. Try reading former Joseph Mitchell’s “Up in the Old Hotel” for starters if you’re that clueless.

    Jen says:

Actually, the Roma are VERY oppressed historically, and even still. In many countries they have very few rights, and were killed wholesale along with the Jewish People during the Holocaust. Not to mention all of the racist stereotypes against them *ahem see above*. I never realized that’s where “gypped” comes from. I’m certainly going to find better alternative from now on. “Ripped off” works or “cheated” or “swindled” or “burned”. It shouldn’t be illegal or anything, but if you don’t have to use historically racist terms why not avoid it?
