This Week in No, You’re Doing It Wrong

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve started to notice more and more MTA conductors making announcements about handicap accessibility in subway stations. It’s equally helpful and disappointing to hear just how few stations are accessible to the handicapped.

But, just like you’d expect with the MTA, even when they try to be helpful, they just can’t do it right. For example, I heard this announcement this morning:

[Doors open]

This is 42nd Street-Times Square. Transfer is available to the 1, 7, A, C, E, N, Q, R and W trains and the shuttle to Grand Central. Connection is available to Port Authority. This station is wheelchair accessible. Next 3 Train stop is 72nd Street. Stand clear of the doors.

[Doors close]

Somehow, the conductor feels that telling passengers that the station is wheelchair accessible five seconds before the doors close is helpful to a guy in a wheelchair on a crowded morning rush-hour train. Sheer brilliance.
