Line at TJ’s Not Limited to Grocery Store

April 14, 2008 – 8:18 am

I think I’ve mentioned how ridiculous the only Trader Joe’s in Manhattan can be. But in every case, I’ve been talking about the grocery store. Every weekend, a line forms to get into the store because it is over capacity. Even at 9am, a line forms to get into the store as soon as it opens, hoping to beat the rush. But every Friday evening, the line migrates a few doors down.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you… the line to get into Trader Joe’s Wine Shop.

Sure, it’s only five people deep, but this was at about 5:30 on Friday night. It was going to get worse before it got better.

These people are impatient, angry, and even worse… they’re sober!

  2. I was there last night around 9pm. Went in, grabbed some tea, and walked straight to the check out line. No fuss, no muss.

  3. Why go to Trader Joes for wine? It’s waaaay cheaper at the liquor store and, also, instead of wine you can buy liquor.

  4. Because, Clinton, all the suburban transplants who fawn over Trader Joe’s would never deign to go into a “ghetto” liquor store. Don’t tell them our secrets. Let them to go crappy Trader Joe’s. More for the rest of us.

  5. Trader Joe’s House Wine: $2.99 a bottle. Where’s it cheaper than that?

  6. Rationale for NOT wine shopping on a Friday or Saturday night. Planning ahead sometimes pays off. And I love me some wine from Trader Joe’s. And yeah, I’m with the last guy. Where can you get it cheaper than $2.99? I’d love to know.

  7. LJ: Exactly. I wasn’t shopping for wine, so I didn’t wait in this line myself. There are suckers that will wait in this line… but can I really call them suckers when they’re buying $2.99 wine?

  8. Trader Joes is far cheaper than “ghetto” liquor stores, you crazy fool.

I often go after work on a Friday - these lines aren’t too common. Luck of the draw, really. It occasionally pays to plan ahead, though.

  9. See this is what happens when you crack wise without actually having ever set foot inside a Trader Joes. I guess, for future wine needs, that’ll be the place I hit. Can anyone tell me if Trader Joes has $5 bottles of vodka? Because the ghetto liquors stores sell them for $6 and if TJ’s is cheaper, I’ll like join that club or whatever it is.

  10. I’ll stick to Crossroads and let the suburban douchebags form a line outside TJ’s.

  11. When the line is long at Trader Joes and you are waiting for more than fifteen minutes to get inside of a store that has wine of great value but hit or miss on quality and you just can’t take it anymore there is a place one can go to seek refuge and grab a seriously great bottle of wine for not much more than that of TJ’s. On Ave. C between 6th and &th streets is a new little wine shop called Alphabet City Wine Co. They do free wine tasting every Friday and Saturday and are very enthusiastic about their product. You could spend three bucks on a wine a TJ’s or can can spend a buck or two more at a place with a staff that loves their wines so much they have all the information you need to feel confident about your purchase. So next time that line is getting to be too much come on across and down and check it out and while your at it stop by Ninth Street Espresso for some of the best coffee in NYC>
