MTA Not Doing Well with These “Electronic Signs”

A sign above the escalator on the B/D/F/V platform at Herald Square:

Okay, look, MTA, I was willing to give you a break on the outlandishly expensive electronic sign system on the L Train. But my high school had these types of signs in the cafeteria. All you had to do was plug in a little device, type in a message (in this case, something along the lines of “watch your step as you leave the escalator” or “please keep away from the platform edge lest the platform crumbles beneath you and you get crushed by a train”), and hit enter. Bam! It’s done.

My high school lunch lady could figure these things out, but not the people who run the MTA.

Actually, it’s best not to dwell on this. Then we might start to think about the people operating the trains.

Dude, I’m at this stop almost every day and this sign is ALWAYS like that. What I mean is, this isn’t a one-time instance. Either they’ve forgotten this sign is there, or they just don’t give a crap.

I almost wish that you would stop pointing these things out, as it always puts a serious hurting on my soul.

I think I’d rather just not know.

I had a great time last night with the people operating the trains. We’re stopped on the R at 59th, we get the usual we’re-being-held-in-the-station spiel, and a couple minutes later I hear the operators over the PA system asking each other what’s going on. Fan-tucking-fastic.

I look at these signs and the only thing I think of is - “Lite-Brite, Lite-Brite, turn on the magical shining light!”

That’s the clock at W. 4th St. that is either 14 or 1:14 minutes off. The MTA’s watches live in a different time zone.

Oh that. It’s not going on for days or weeks. When I was going to Coney Island (you know what time of year it is when you go to the beach) & had to change trains the damn thing was still like that. Well hope that boosted your trust into the MTA.

This is my home station and I have brought this to the attenion of the station manager a few times. (I called the number on the nice sign with her smiling face.) She actually told me that the device used to program the sign was misplaced. WHAT A WASTE OF $$$. Even if it did work, whats the purpose of the sign?

At least YOUR high school lunch ladies could figure it out…

I’m pretty sure I remember the board being updated for the start of the school year, but it having the same message all year…

And now, come to think of it, it may have only been updated once in all of history… and it just makes sense again at the beginning of each school year…
