Why Are New York’s Streets in Bad Shape?

Sure, you might blame the horrible traffic, the seemingly constant utility work, or the overabundance of delivery trucks for the poor condition of New York City’s streets. But I think I’ve found the real culprit.

This is a picture of an M101 bus rumbling up Third Avenue late Wednesday night. The bus still has its snow chains on. Observe, as the chains dig up perfectly dry pavement, because it stopped snowing almost 24 hours before. Oh, and after it stopped snowing, it rained for a while, and washed all the snow away.

I guess the MTA just wanted to be prepared for the next giant invisible snowstorm. I don’t know what weather forecast they were watching. But next time you’re riding in a cab and you hit a jaw-shattering pothole, you’ll be glad to know you can blame something else on the MTA.

After the time I saw an MTA employee happily snoozing away mid-shift in the token booth at my stop, nothing they do surprises me anymore.

[…] the buses were over-equipped for city streets. Chris, the East Village Idiot, noticed a few buses still equipped with snow chains nearly a day after the snow had stopped falling. If the streets are torn up along your favorite bus […]
