Breaking News: It’s Cold in January

January 2, 2008 – 12:31 pm

5dayforecast.JPGThat was the top story on the local news channels last night. I actually heard these words uttered by a meteorologist on Channel 2 yesterday: “temperatures will plummet down to 28.” News flash, news producers: THE NORMAL LOW IN NEW YORK CITY IN JANUARY IS 27 DEGREES. Maybe that’s cold for Florida, but not for New York City.

Tonight, it might drop down into the teens, which is a whole ten degrees below normal. Our high on Saturday was more than ten degrees above normal, but that wasn’t the top story on the news, was it?

This media-fueled obsession with the weather is seriously getting out of control. The cops are killing people, it’s not even safe to step out on the street without getting shot, and there’s a big election tomorrow. But that’s not news. You know what is news? Cold weather in January!

I can only imagine how they’ll play out today’s news coverage. Stick someone outside with a coat and a TV camera, and it’s a “live exclusive!”

  2. Did they make a 2008 prediction that it would be warmer this summer?

  3. Maybe God sent them one of those video press releases the local stations like to run so much.
