Enemies List: Campus Squeeze
December 6, 2007 – 9:21 amI don’t get enraged very easily, but the folks at Campus Squeeze raised my blood pressure a good dozen points by posting a list of the 20 Ugliest College Campuses. Coming in at #17: my alma mater, Ithaca College. Here’s the photo of Ithaca College that they used to prove their point:

Okay, fair enough. That’s our old gymnasium (which is in the process of being replaced, by the way), and it is a bit ugly.
But if you stand in exactly the same spot where that photo was taken, and just turn 90 degrees to your right, this is the view you have:
Yup, that’s one really ugly campus. Thanks, jerks.
Maybe the guy who wrote the article didn’t get into Ithaca. Or maybe they had an ex-girlfriend who went to Ithaca and the relationship ended badly. Whatever the reason, they’re dead wrong.
Except about Drexel, the #1 school on the list. Philadelphia has plenty of ugly to go around.

What you don’t mention is that YOUR picture is only valid about 3 months of the year. The rest of the year that view is of a bleak, gray town.

Okay, I’m a fellow-Bomber, so I can understand your outrage on this one. I don’t think IC should be included on any list of that sort, simply because the town and Finger Lakes Region is one of the most beautiful areas in the country.
However, even though I am a proud alumnus, I do have to admit that the physical campus buildings are hideous and the unfortunate result of a 70s building boom.

Looking at the list again… he based his list solely on architecture… not landscaping, surrounding land etc. So in reality… look at the quads… look at Dillingham, look at Hill Center… yeah.. we dont have very good looking buildings.
Still.. not cool to be on the list.
GO BOMBERS!

Ithaca now has one of the only “green” buildings in the entire country (as far as colleges go). and apparently (first hand intel on this one) the sun gets reflected into the eyes of the students on the 3rd floor of Friends. Prof’s have cancelled multiple classes based on this phenomenon.

You get an even better view from the towers.

Thet might as well claim UC Santa Cruz as ugly as well. Maybe they were talking about the students or faculty?

Fuck Campus Squeeze! They’ve obviously never been to ithaca. There are plenty of Beautiful AND ugly buildings on campus.
P.S. why is there an ad for a pink waterless toilet on your site? think about the stink of a waterless toilet.

I went to IC, too! And one of the reasons I transferred [to Smith] was because… (wait for it) …the IC campus was so profoundly ugly. It wasn’t the main reason I transferred, but it was one of the reasons. Keep in mind I’m talking architecture, not views –though I did have an excellent view of CORNELL from my first-year dorm. It taunted me– nor am I talking about Ithaca the town (cute! good restaurants!) nor the region (lovely!… If you have a car. With snow tires. And you know how to drive said snow-betirèd car in the snow. Which I didn’t). It’s true, too, what the writer says about IC in comparison to Cornell–Cornell’s campus really is lovely, and IC suffers a lot in comparison.
And can you name me a beautiful building on campus?
By G on Dec 6, 2007
G: Sure. The new business school. The Fitness Center. The Center for New Sciences. I could go on. Yes, there are some ugly buildings on IC’s campus, but the same can be said about Cornell… the Johnson Museum of Art, their famed public building, looks like a giant concrete toilet sitting on the hillside.
By Chris on Dec 6, 2007
But the fact that the art museum does look like a giant toilet is part of what makes it so cool. And still compared to IC’s towers it is actually quite nice.

Yeah, alright, Ithaca is gorges, but I gotta agree that many buildings on campus are hideous, and if that’s what he was basing the article on, he has a point. Doesn’t make me any less proud of IC though!
