This is a Post About Hockey

Would you believe that hockey season is right around the corner? No? Like most U.S. Americans, you probably don’t watch hockey. Well, believe it or not, I do watch hockey. You probably think Wayne Gretzky still plays in the NHL. Did you know he retired eight years ago and is the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes now? No? Did you know there’s a hockey team in Phoenix? No? Well, I guess you’re excused for that. I don’t think people in Phoenix even know there’s a hockey team in Phoenix.

sabrescrocs.jpgAnyway, my Fantasy Hockey draft is coming up, and the biggest dilemma when registering was naming my team. I wanted to pay homage to my favorite team, the Buffalo Sabres. For reference, their extremely ugly logo is seen on the right on a pair of extremely ugly footwear, a brilliant innovation in NHL apparel which I’m sure will sell like hotcakes.

I figured I would salute the Sabres by using a player’s name in my team name as a play on words. For example, last year, before his defection to the God-awful Philadelphia Flyers in the off-season, I dedicated my fantasy team to its star player, Daniel Briere, by naming the team “Ham and Briere.” It was either going to be that, or “I Live on Drury Lane.” Yuk yuk yuk.

So, here were the finalists for my fantasy team name this year:

After much debate, I decided to take the high road and go with a really classy name. I present to you my 2007-08 Fantasy Hockey Team…

    Good effort with the name.

While for the most part a prospect, I can’t help but think the possibilities would be endless with Michael Funk (link from hockeysfuture.com). He’s in the Sabres system, so it still counts. Who knows, with Numminen going down for heart surgery, he may make the team outright.

Good luck with your fantasy hockey season!

Hard to compete with Kotalik My Balls. Any other fantasy name would Paille in comparison.

Umm…didn’t the Rangers get Drury and Philly get Briere? And where did Vaneck go? I had high hopes for the Sabres last season but must admit I can’t wait to see a Rangers-Sabres game at MSG this season!

I personally liked “What the Hecht” and “Hello, Numminen.”

I’m not creative with names. I named mine the Flogsta Fuckups. Flogsta is where I lived in Sweden.

Which league are you playing? Yahoo?
