Television Shows That, Believe It or Not, Are Still On The Air

September 6, 2007 – 3:54 pm

It’s just about the beginning of the new fall television season, and I’d just like to point out a few shows that are shockingly still on the air. Perhaps they’ve fallen off your radar, but the fact that these programs have carried on as long as they have boggles my mind. I don’t watch much TV, but when I do, and I still see these shows in the lineup, I can’t help but wonder why.

kingofthehill.jpgKing of the Hill
11th Season
Inexplicably airs Sundays, 8:30pm, FOX

I know I’ve tackled this show before, but does anyone outside of Texas find this show even remotely funny? I mean, I know Texas is a big state, but the 49 other states shouldn’t have to put up with this crap year after year. I have never found this show even remotely funny, but Fox seems to forget that the Mike Judge/Beavis and Butthead halo effect wore off about a decade ago. Cancel it, please. There’s no room for two annoying Texan things in this world.

er.JPGER
14th Season
Inexplicably airs Thursdays, 10:00pm, NBC

Hey! I remember this show! Is George Clooney still on it? No?! Oh. Is anyone still on the show that was on it when people actually watched it? No?! Oh. I can’t imagine what NBC is thinking by letting this thing drag out. Its audience has declined every single year since its second season. It’s as if their programming executives got together to discuss the fall lineup and had this conversation:

Executive 1: So, what’s next?
Executive 2: Thursdays, 10pm.
Executive 1: ER.
Young Executive: Hey! I have an idea! Let’s put an innovative, compelling drama on in that timeslot instead!
Executive 1: ER.
Executive 2: Inn-o-va-tive? What do you mean?
Young Executive: Like… Friday Night Lights! We could finally put that show in a timeslot when people might actually watch it!
Executive 1: ER!
Executive 2: ER it is.

cops.JPGCOPS
20th Season
Inexplicably airs Saturdays, 8:00pm, FOX

There’s a simple reason why COPS has lasted as long as it has: nobody watches television on Saturday nights. Its longevity is obviously not attributed to the quality of the show. Sure, it’s reality television, but how can you draw this thing out for 20 seasons without seeing the same situations repeated every time? Not to mention that this show now airs on three television networks. In its final episode, the cameras should be turned on the crew, and they should be arrested for making us put up with this crap for so long.

afhv.JPGAmerica’s Funniest Home Videos
18th Season
Inexplicably airs Sundays, 7:00pm, ABC

I’d hope that after 18 years, they would have found the funniest home video. If they haven’t yet, it’s time to pack it in. The post-Bob Saget era of this show is now longer than the Bob Saget era. Don’t you think that they would’ve bumped up that $10,000 prize a little by now, based on inflation? Next thing you know, it’ll cost more to fly the family out to L.A. than to give them a prize. Thankfully, YouTube is making AFHV obsolete. What does the future hold? iCaught! Ugh. The future is bleak.

  2. Love the COPS shows, and had no idea about the Funniest videos still being on the air.

  3. Astonishingly enough, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen any of the aforementioned shows.

  4. Aww, you’re hatin on Hank Hill?? He sells propane and propane accessories!
Okay, I’m from Texas, fine. And I think that shit is funny. But for the record, GWB was BORN in Connecticut and went to prep school in Massachusetts!! I can’t help it if he’s a pretend cowboy who makes us look bad. (can you tell I’m bitter?)

  5. America’s Funniest is still on? No kidding.

I’m with you 100% on King of the Hill, that show has never been funny, but that hasn’t stopped Fox from canceling it. King must be cheap to make.

No idea why ER is still on, I lost interest in that one after the second season or so. Put it & us out of its misery.

  6. I stopped watching ER after Clooney left. I mean, really. Where’s the incentive?

AFHV is actually funnier/better now that Saget left. I’ll tune in when I’m bored out of my skull and/or sick. BTW, Bob Saget is one of the filthiest comedians out there. Let ‘Full House’ not be your bellweather. Went to school with his nephew and met him at a bar in LA one night and told him he’s a sick fuck. He found that highly complimentary.

I personally find it appalling that ‘Big Brother’ is still on.

  7. I hate to say it, but I stopped hating AFHV and have started to find it funny again. I think it is just because everything else on is so much worse

  8. Hate to break it to you, but there would still be way more than two annoying Texan things in the world, even if King of the Hill were canceled.

  9. What about Law and Order? Will the three-show juggernaut never die? Trial By Jury doesn’t count.

  10. Hate to break it to you, but there would still be way more than two annoying Texan things in the world, even if King of the Hill were canceled.

    You don’t get it.

  11. What about Survivor? They’re up to freakin’ season 15 already!

  12. Oh you’re kidding me. I live in South Africa. We can’t afford the good show so we end up watching things like Funniest Home Videos. But when it stopped airing here I just assumed that Bob Saget had died. He is still the host of the show, right?

  13. I think I have a stalker.

  14. My grandmother with Alzheimer’s likes watching AFHV, otherwise I’d be all for canning that show! I’ve never seen a single episode of KOTH, just the previews make me spit up a little in my mouth. ER’s tired, hopefully Grey’s puts it out of it’s misery (I know they don’t air at the same time, but I can dream). And COPS is classic redneck TV. And you know there’s plenty of them to keep that show on if they kept you know who in you know where for another 4 years.

  15. i’m from texas and i’ve never found king of the hill to be even remotely funny.

then again, i’ve lived in new york forever and friends, king of queens and everybody loves raymond all sucked, too.

have to admit to liking law & order, except for criminal intent, which always seems to be filming on my block. that’s just fucking annoying.

  16. we watch funniest home videos at my local bar. it’s amazing how much funnier it is with no sound (see: annoying tom bergeron comments) and alcohol. ask your local bartender to try it out.

  17. Goodness, at least you have the choice not to watch COPS. My senior year in high school I took a Criminal Justice class and we were forced to watch it every day because the teacher just didn’t feel like teaching.

  18. I don’t regularly watch King of the Hill, but when I have, I actually found it pretty funny.

And AFV is one of my favoritest shows of all time. When I had a DVR (back before I was homeless), I had it set up to record AFV anytime it was on.

  19. Have you looked around lately?
Our society is made up of white-trash losers whose mentality can’t comprehend anything more than watching a cat running around with a paper bag on it’s head for 15 minutes.
That’s why the malls are full and there are stores like Build a Bear making millions.
I am not better than these people, I just want Arrested Development back on the air.
    On second thought…I am better.
    Judge me.

  21. fbl - I second that we need Arrested Development back on the air.

  22. Cops is one of the greatest shows ever put on Fox. I think I’ve watched every episode. :-)
