Breaking News: 92.3 to Become K-Rock at 5pm

old-krock.jpgFor those of you like me who have completely stopped listening to radio because there’s nothing decent on the airwaves anymore, I have some news.

January 1, 2006 was a dark day for radio in New York. That’s when K-Rock flipped formats to the trainwreck that was “Free FM,” a talk station that was anchored by two shows that were kicked off the air for either poor ratings or poor taste.

At 5pm today, rock will be back on the radio in New York at 92.3.

At 5pm today, I might start listening to the radio again.

UPDATE at 6:15pm: Same old shit.

An open letter to the “new” K-Rock:

Dear K-Rock,

In the first hour of your “return” this afternoon, I heard you play both Papa Roach and Rush within 15 minutes of each other.

I would love to meet your ideal listener. You know, the one who is both a fan of Papa Roach and Rush.

If you can introduce me to a substantial number of people in New York who are fans of both of the aforementioned bands and will support your station, I will immediately stop bitching about your trainwreck programming.

Until then, wake the fuck up and remember that if someone wants to listen to Rush, they can turn on Q104. Or even Jack FM - a station that you own.

Yours truly,
The East Village Idiot

While I might welcome back K-Rock - I can only hope that they won’t just start paying that same crappy rock that they were playing prior to the format change on 1/1/06.

Also, I hope that this doesn’t mean that Fez of the Ron and Fez show is way to ill to continue doing the show.

I echo Beehive. Is it going to be good K-Rock with new music like in my high school days or crappy K-Rock like what we had for the better part of the last 18 months?

But anyway, good news. Rock back on the air in NYC.

At least when K-Rock changed formats, they officially changed formats. I remember feeling really betrayed around 8th grade when I realized Z100 was slowly sneaking away. They played TLC’s “Waterfalls,” and my 13-year-old heart broke a little. After losing X107 a year or two later, K-Rock was it. I mean, I’m an old fogey and listen to WCBS and NPR all the time now, but I’m glad to know K-Rock will be back.

Here’s what’s being leaked to radio insider sites:

K-Rock will be back at 92.3 as of 5pm today. What I’ve heard is O&A will still do mornings. The rest of the day will be focused on rock mainly from the 90s, with some currents and 80s tracks mixed in.

If they lean Alternative , they may sound a little like Clear Channel’s new Radio 104.5 in Philly.

Either way… some rock is back to NYC!

This is great news! I stopped listening to the radio too. Sucks since I’m sick of my I-Pod. This is similar to when Q104.3 changed from an “alternative station” to The New Classic Q” back in ‘96… it was a kickass station. But what most people don’t know is the night they made the transition… I remember it was the summer but I’m not sure when… the entire night they played weird cartoon theme songs and in the morning without any warning The New Classic Q was born.

No kidding. I remember that. One day, I woke up and the Spice Girls were playing on my clock radio on Z100. That was the last day I woke up to Z100.

Jamie… I remember this Z-100 betrayal as well and after years of examination I can pin point the change to one single song… Coolio’s Gangsta Paradise.

i’m a little too young to have seen z-100 tank, as they were already playing gangsta’s paradise by the time i started listening. it’s worth noting, however, that in the months prior to its demise, 92.3 k-rock could be heard playing tracks like “99 problems” by jay-z. that’s about when i switched the radio for the iPod.

here’s to hoping k-rock gets it right this time.

The RadioChick is broadcasting her entire house while Carmine her bf, makes his new drum group. It was very addicting to watch.

Amen brother. I recently went to LA and teased my friends for LA’s awful awful radio options. Then I came back home and realized how far far better LA’s were. I called them and opologized. NY should be ashamed. Deeply deeply ashamed.

The slow degradtion of NY radio is one of the reasons East Village Radio was formed. Although it doesn’t broadcast over the airwaves, there’s always live streams and podcasts available with quality music of all genres.

(Self-plug, I apologize, but we truly believe that radio has suffered over the last decade and we’re doing what we can to fix that).
